Hurricane Philippe passes at a Distance (Advisory #52)

Philippe strengthened into a hurricane today and has gradually strengthened throughout the day to 90mph. It has  small, cloud-filled eye.  Philippe is forecast to continue off to the Northeast and pass safely out to sea. The pressure gradient between a high pressure drifting southwards and the hurricane moving northeastwards is creating moderate to strong northeasterly winds across Bermuda along with a trough that brought some showers this afternoon.

Our favorite models agree with the pattern that suggests that a sub-tropical or tropical storm could form in the Southwest Atlantic over the next few days and move along the Florida eastcoast until it gets to a landfall in Georgia. At the same time, High pressure should drift southwards over Bermuda and winds should die down as the pressure gradient decreases as Philippe moves away.
