PWS History

Records from my Personal Weather Station (PWS) are kept since November 2010. Starting in December 2009, I had a Davis Vantage Vue integrated sensor suite mounted at roughly 3.4 m above ground level, at a site ~35 m above sea level. In 2013 the thermometer, hygrometer, and rain gauge failed. Where they failed, those fields were filled with data derived from nearby PWS from Wunderground. In December 2013, I replaced the Vantage Vue system with a Davis Vantage Pro2 system. This system was mounted slightly differently because the sensors were not integrated into one suite and so they could be positioned more ideally. Since 29 December 2013, the anemometer was raised to about 5.0 m above ground level, while the thermometer, hygrometer and rain gauge were kept at 3.4 m. Some communication and software issues have resulted in small chunks of missing data, including for a time following Hurricane Gonzalo in October 2014. Where there are estimated values and missing data this will be included in remarks. Wind data is unreliable (if available) starting April 2016 to present.

Temperature
Recorded in degrees Fahrenheit. Max = The high temperature for the day; Min = The low temperature for the day; Mean = Before 1 January 2012 this was (Max+Min)/2. After 1 January 2012 this is the average temperature for the day calculated as the mean of all of the temperature recordings at 1-minute intervals.

Precipitation
Precipitation, rainfall measured in inches. Solid precipitation (ie. Hail) is rarely observed in Bermuda and is noted in remarks. Total = the 24 hour precipitation total; Max Rate = the highest rainfall rate for the day – only recorded after 1 January 2012.

Wind
Wind measured in miles per hour (mph);

Mean = The average wind for the day calculated as the mean of all the sustained wind recordings. Only available after 1 January 2012;

Max Sus = The highest sustained wind for the day. Only available after 1 January 2012;

Gust Max = The peak 3-second gust for the day;

Direction = This is given as a number from 0-15, going clockwise around the 16 cardinal directions – 0 is North, 4 is East, 8 is South, 12 is West etc. Direction is taken as the modal (most common) wind direction for the day;

Average Direction is the direction of the vector sum of the winds for the month calculated with the mean wind speed for the day and the modal wind direction for the day.

5-minute sustained winds from 16 June 2012 to 16 June 2013, then 1-minute sustained winds from 1 January 2013 to present.

Pressure
Pressure measured in hectopascals (hPa); Max = the highest pressure recorded for the day; Min = the lowest pressure recorded for the day; Mean = Before 1 January 2014, this is (Max+Min)/2. After 1 January 2014, this is the average pressure for the day.
